Join the main Jedediah Smith / American River bicycle trail and head west, downstream toward the mile-13 / Harrington direction. Turn after one outward mile, before a public-road crossing, barrier or unsuitable section, whichever comes first, then retrace. Walk lot and access-drive interfaces. No bridge-bank switch, street detour or Discovery Park visit is part of this outing.

Elevation
Visit Sacramento describes the paved American River trail as mostly flat with some rolling terrain; the county describes gently sloping park approaches. These are qualitative descriptions, not a measured maximum for this selected mile. The county recommends experienced bicycle riders because this is a busy through-trail, so it is not a learn-to-ride space.

Use the Arden Way main entry and designated visitor parking, then walk the signed public paved connection to the main bicycle trail. The equestrian staging and administrative parking are separate.

Ride: Join the main Jedediah Smith / American River bicycle trail and head west, downstream toward the mile-13 / Harrington direction. Remain on the paved through-trail rather than circling the fishing pond or crossing Harold Richey Bridge to River Bend. Turn after one outward mile, before a public-road crossing, barrier or unsuitable section, whichever comes first, then retrace. Walk lot and access-drive interfaces. No bridge-bank switch, street detour or Discovery Park visit is part of this outing.

Distance: Chosen maximum two-mile return; parking walking extra. The county’s roughly 32-mile Discovery–Beals corridor and older 26-mile historical record are not this outing.

Permission and effort: County main-trail rules and visitor information expressly support bicycling on the paved multi-use trail.

Planning: William B. Pond sunrise to sunset; return before the park gate closes. Lighting requirements do not authorize after-hours parking. Current county park profile lists $8 ordinary vehicle entry with self-payment when no collector is present. Summer holiday and special-event rates can differ; pay posted terms. County maximum 15 mph; ride single file, announce a left pass and stop off the trail. Yield and slow near pedestrians and horses. Helmet required under 18. Dogs on a leash no longer than six feet. Retained August 2026 county guidance permits Classes 1 and 2 with limits and prohibits Class 3; other jurisdictions differ.

Access: Reviewed October 20, 2026: county status page labels William B. Pond and the American River Parkway trail open. It still carries an August 8 four-hour work notice and a Discovery entrance note ending October 1; neither is proof of a present closure or reopening elsewhere. The selected outing avoids Discovery, closed SARA/Sarah Court/Waterton access and the river bridge. Open status is not an inspection of today’s pavement, debris or flooding.

Choose comfortable weather, bring water and check current signs before setting out. No parking-space pin, surveyed route or GPX is supplied.
