Eagle Trail: summer lakeshore return — detailed guide

Source review: 2026-10-12. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.

Eagle Trail offers a modest pedal beside the southern shore of Cushman Lake at Tanana Lakes Recreation Area in Fairbanks. The borough's 2026 trail guide allows bicycles and describes a broad, flat trail surfaced with compacted gravel. Expect an improved park path rather than pavement. In dry, firm conditions it is a prospect for an ordinary comfortable bicycle; soft gravel, standing water, snow or ice can change that experience.

Plan on approximately 1.3 miles of riding, with walking from the visitor parking area added separately. The distance doubles the 0.66-mile Eagle Trail shown on the borough's summer map. It is an approximate trail-based return, not a surveyed car-to-car measurement. Stay on the main shore route and retrace it, rather than adding every small spur or trying to circle the lake.

For vehicle arrival, use the borough's South Lathrop Street park entrance. The department reports that this entrance opened when the access project finished in October 2024. Its update directs visitors to reach both boat launches from South Lathrop and identifies a closed gate on Westlake Lane near the peninsula playground. Older park maps show different road arrangements. Follow current visitor access signs and remain on established park roads.

The 2026 Eagle Trail directions identify the parking lot at the end of Westlake Lane. Use designated visitor parking in that western, non-motorized boat-launch area, then walk your bicycle through the parking and road-end approach to Eagle Trail on the southwest side of Cushman Lake. Keep clear of vehicles and the boat-launch ramp. The walking distance, individual stall and accessible approach have not been measured. The general park address, 4400 South Cushman Street Extension, does not replace the South Lathrop arrival instructions.

At the western Eagle Trail entrance, follow the main lake-shore path east and southeast, keeping Cushman Lake on your left on the outward ride. Continue to the southeastern end where Eagle meets the vehicle-permitted route shown along the southern park edge. Turn back before entering that motorized route, then follow Eagle west to the same entrance. Walk the parking approach back to your car. This return stays on Eagle; it does not use the southern service-road loop, cross the lake or require a boat trip to Island Trail.

The borough's “Easy” rating and flat-trail description support a gentle summer prospect. They do not establish a measured maximum slope or certify every approach for wheelchairs. Take the shore bends slowly, give walkers space and stop before turning. A rider who finds the gravel loose or the approach uncomfortable can walk that part or shorten the outing. The trail-challenge sign was less than half a mile from the start in the 2026 event guide; that sign distance is not Eagle's full length, and the event's end date does not establish a trail closure.

The park's published visitor data lists 8 a.m.–10 p.m. The linked 2019 brochure describes those hours for summer and a gate locked at 10 p.m. Use the summer window, current posted gate rules and daylight for this guide. The separately published winter map shows ski and ice-skating arrangements, including routes across the winter landscape. This summer ride does not authorize cycling on ice, groomed ski routes or winter motorized trails.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks lists Tanana Lakes as free in its summer visitor information. The borough's pavilion rental charge is for reserving that facility, rather than the price of this bicycle outing. Check current parking terms; a manager-confirmed ordinary admission and parking tariff has not been established. No camping or reservation is part of this ride. Keep pets leashed and use designated parking.

Bring drinking water. The facility guide lists park restrooms in both seasons, but it does not promise that a particular restroom beside this starting area will be open. The 2024 road and launch improvements are completed work; the later proposals for a larger trail loop and trailhead improvements remain separate. Current snow, flooding, surface repairs and gate operations still need checking before setting out.
