Idaho · Other separated ride
Take a short ride on the paved paths around Edson Fichter Pond, reached from the nature-area parking beside the Indian Hills Soccer Complex. Edson Fichter — paved fishing-pond circuit — detailed guide
Source review: 2026-10-12. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.
Take a short ride on the paved paths around Edson Fichter Pond, reached from the nature-area parking beside the Indian Hills Soccer Complex. Follow the main path over the Portneuf River, circle the fishing pond once and return the same way. Allow about 0.9 miles of riding, plus the walked parking approach.
This is a small nature-area outing rather than a ride through the entire Portneuf Greenway. Idaho Fish and Game owns and manages the nature area and explicitly welcomes bicycles on its paved paths. The course excludes unimproved paths, the separate sporting-dog pond circuit, fishing docks and the garden construction area. Owner bicycle rules, owner map
Start and course
From Bannock Highway, turn onto Cheyenne Avenue and follow signs to the Edson Fichter Nature Area / Indian Hills Soccer Complex parking. Fish and Game’s current directions describe entering the complex about 0.10 mile along Cheyenne, then following the short path through the parking area and over the river bridge to the pond. Use signed visitor parking; the adjacent elementary school is an orientation landmark, not permission to park on school grounds. Current owner access directions
Walk your bicycle from your parking space toward the main-path information kiosk. Begin the measured ride on the main paved path near the kiosk, continuing over the river bridge toward the fishing pond. Stay on the direct paved connection rather than taking the Beverly Trail or garden footpaths. Walk the bridge if it is crowded or its approach feels uncomfortable.
At the fishing-pond circuit, take the left-hand paved branch and keep the larger fishing pond on your right. Follow its paved perimeter. At branches near the sporting-dog pond, stay beside the fishing pond instead of extending into the separate dog recreation circuit. Leave fishing docks and waterside platforms to people fishing.
Complete one circuit and return along the same main path and bridge to the information kiosk. Walk back to your parking space. A shorter return along the paved approach is fine if you prefer not to circle the pond.
The owner’s map uses gray lines for paved paths. Its gold Beverly Trail, dashed unimproved paved paths and dashed stone trails are separate. The map’s north arrow points left; follow the named landmarks and path key rather than assuming the top of the page is north.
Distance and terrain
The approximate distance comes from tracing the chosen paths against the owner map’s 0–600–1,200-foot scale. The reference pond circuit measures about 0.50 mile; the direct kiosk approach and return add about 0.38 mile, giving roughly 0.88 mile, rounded to 0.9 mile. Treat this as approximately 0.8–1.0 mile before the walked parking approach, not a surveyed track. The map was updated January 26, 2022, and is an orientation source rather than a current inspection or navigation GPX.
Terrain assessment is an inference: 13 successful USGS samples around the pond banks span about 6.5 feet in elevation. They use one-meter ground data acquired in May 2023 and were placed outside the published water boundary. They suggest modest general pond-bank relief, but are not surveyed points along this bicycle circuit. Three additional requests failed. The samples do not establish maximum slope, cumulative climbing, bridge-ramp grade, pavement condition or accessibility. The parking approach and bridge can differ from the sampled banks; walk any uncomfortable section. USGS elevation service
Rules and visit planning
Keep to the paved course, give space to walkers and people fishing, and approach the bridge and junctions slowly. Dogs must be leashed on the ordinary nature-area paths. Fish and Game allows dogs off leash only in the designated sporting-dog pond area and other posted designated space, under owner control; that exception does not apply throughout this ride.
Do not let dogs swim in the fishing pond or fish in the dog pond. Do not swim or boat in the fishing pond. Remove litter and dog waste, and do not feed or crowd wildlife. Fishing-license requirements concern fishing, not ordinary bicycle use. Owner rules
Choose daylight, follow current gate and parking signs and bring water. The reviewed sources identify a restroom and accessible pond access, but do not confirm current restroom operation, parking fees or fixed daily gate hours. A fishing-planner field describing water motor restrictions does not authorize motorized trail use. This guide is for ordinary pedal bikes.
Conditions and review
Reviewed October 12, 2026 UTC. Fish and Game’s May 1, 2026 notice announces closure of Ardith’s Garden for construction beginning May 4 while explicitly keeping the main pathway through the nature area open. This course uses the mapped main paved approach and fishing-pond circuit; it excludes the garden work area. No actual garden reopening or dated October inspection of the chosen bridge and circuit was found. Owner construction notice
Check current barriers before entering. If the main path or bridge is closed, turn back rather than using an unimproved spur, school grounds or a roadside detour. This is a complete research draft with a fresh access, surface, short-incline and services check still required before launch. It supplies a named course and owner map, not a surveyed parking pin or GPX.
