Ride an easy-rated gravel circuit near the western end of Farm Island, east of Pierre, South Dakota. This outing includes the Nature Exploration Trail's western access stem, its outer loop and the return along the stem: approximately 1.8 miles total, with a short walked parking approach extra.
The trail map also calls the entire Nature Exploration network 1.8 miles. That network includes an interior connector. Our selected circuit leaves out that connector and repeats the access stem to return to the same start. The manager's reference geometry gives about 1.75 horizontal miles for that selection, rounded to 1.8 for planning. It is not a surveyed navigation track.
Start and route
Enter Farm Island Recreation Area from SD Highway 34 and follow the park signs to the island causeway. Use the public parking at the island end of the causeway, beside the vault-toilet symbol on the trail map. This is the western Nature Exploration access, not a campsite or the east campground. The park's general address is 1301 Farm Island Road; use the actual park and parking signs for the final approach.
Walk your bicycle through the lot to the signed Nature Exploration Trail. Follow the green-coded route east along its access stem. At the first main junction, take the southern outer branch toward the Lake Sharpe shoreline. Continue around the eastern end of that loop. At the eastern junction, choose the northern outer branch, rather than the straight interior connector back west. Follow the northern loop back to the first main junction, then retrace the western stem to the parking approach.
Use the green Nature Exploration route on the manager map at junctions. Do not continue east onto the natural-surface CCC trails or add the short ruins spurs. Park roads and the causeway are outside the ridden circuit. The parking approach still has vehicles, and maintenance access is possible; this is not an absolute vehicle-free claim.
Suitability and facilities
The manager labels this named gravel trail Easy and explicitly allows bicycles. It is an improved aggregate route, not pavement. Loose or wet material may be uncomfortable on narrow tires. Width and maximum slope are not supplied, and the GIS does not designate the trail ADA compliant. Ride slowly around bends, yield to walkers and avoid riding when the surface is soft, flooded, icy or obstructed.
Ordinary day-use hours are 6 a.m.–11 p.m., subject to posted restrictions. Plan for daylight. A vehicle park entrance license is required: the reviewed park page lists $10 daily for South Dakota residents and $15 for nonresidents, or $40/$60 annually. Campsite fees are separate.
Water and flush facilities may close from October 1 through April 30. Vault toilets usually remain available, but bring water and check the facility on arrival. Applicable seasonal hunting and local access signs should be checked before entering the nature area; no blanket trail closure is inferred from a hunting season.
Conditions and sources
Checked October 12, 2026 UTC (October 11 Central). The current park profile, published maps, named-trail GIS and day-use regulations were reviewed. No specific Nature Exploration closure was found in the reviewed current profile; GIS “Open” is a reference attribute, not proof of a recent inspection. An undated flood-restoration article found in the state news archive describes an earlier May/June season and is not used to establish present conditions.
