Fatlands — the Betzwood river return
Pennsylvania · Other separated ride
Follow the north bank of the Schuylkill River at Valley Forge National Historical Park for an approximately six-mile out-and-back. The National Park Service describes this three-mile corridor, formerly called the River Trail, as level, shaded and surfaced with packed fine gravel. Its accessibility page says there are no steep areas. This is a different outing from the park's hilly paved Joseph Plumb Martin loop.

Fatlands — the Betzwood river return — detailed guide
Source review: 2026-10-11. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.
Maintenance is ongoing. The park's current conditions page expressly keeps Fatlands open to walkers, cyclists and horseback riders during trail widening and relocation away from eroding riverbanks. Ride cautiously around work, follow posted directions and turn back before any barrier or active work area. That may shorten this outing. An open-trail notice does not establish the condition of every section on your visit.
Start in the designated public parking at Betzwood Picnic Area, north of the river. Use the NPS directions for Betzwood, rather than navigating to the main visitor center on the opposite bank. From the visitor center area, the driving directions use US 422 West, the first exit for Trooper Road South/Route 363, a left at the top of the ramp and a left downhill to the dead end, then a right into Betzwood. The NPS picnic-area coordinate is a general destination reference, not a surveyed parking stall or trail entrance.
Walk your bicycle from your parking space to the signed Fatlands Trail. Follow the gravel river path upstream, toward the Fatlands Trail parking area along Pawlings Road. At that trailhead, turn around before entering the public road and retrace your route to Betzwood. The park map distinguishes this path from the parallel paved Schuylkill River Trail and the connecting Commissary Trail. Do not add those paths, Sullivan's Bridge or the steeper Chapel Trail to this distance.
The published trail length is about three miles each way. Doubling it gives the approximate six-mile ride; the approach from your parking space and any earlier worksite turnaround change the actual distance. A numerical maximum slope and elevation gain have not been independently measured. Expect parking-lot vehicle interfaces at the ends, although the selected river path avoids a public-road transfer.
Packed gravel can suit an ordinary recreational bicycle in suitable conditions, but it may soften after rain and can develop loose stone, puddles or debris. Keep right, slow around other users, announce passing and give horses and walkers room. Remain on designated paths and leash pets. Bring water; picnic tables and seasonal public restrooms are identified at Betzwood, but current drinking-water availability and restroom operation have not been verified.
Ordinary NPS admission is free, with no entrance pass required. The park compendium sets grounds hours at 7 AM until thirty minutes after sunset; a daylight visit is preferable. E-bikes are allowed where ordinary bicycles are legal, with motor power assisting pedaling on nonmotorized trails. Throttle-only travel is prohibited there. Follow any additional posted restrictions.
Checked October 11, 2026: current NPS trail descriptions, accessibility information, the complete two-page trail map, conditions, compendium, fees, Betzwood directions and all three records in the live park alert feed. The feed also closes County Line Road to all traffic on weekdays and closes the Maurice Stephens parking area during construction; those south-side routes are outside this return. Recheck Fatlands maintenance and public access before publication or a visit.
