Five Mile Creek return from Black Creek Park — detailed guide

Source review: 2026-10-19. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.

Start with a short taste of the crushed-stone rail trail between Fultondale and Gardendale. The former railway offers a gentler alternative to the area's mountain-bike singletrack. This outing stays on the main rail alignment and returns the same way.

Distance: up to 4 miles out and back, plus the walking approach. Reset a distance counter when you reach the rail trail; turn after at most two outward miles, or sooner before a public-road crossing, closure or unsuitable surface. This is a designed limit, not a marked two-mile destination. The regional inventory's 8.25 miles describes the larger one-way corridor to Newfound Creek. The developer's 2019 eleven-mile return describes an earlier extent; neither is the length of this outing.

Start: use public visitor parking at Black Creek Park on Yarbrough Road, Fultondale. The current city park page links a 2026 map showing the main lot beside the senior center, the access road and a separate rail trail along the park's northern edge. Follow the signed rail-trail access on foot and walk the bicycle through parking and across the access road where legal and clear. The diagram does not show a protected crossing. If you cannot find a lawful, usable connection, choose another ride rather than riding along the road or forcing an access through vegetation. The city hall address in the website footer is not this trailhead; senior-center membership does not govern the public trail.

Course: on the rail trail, follow signs toward Gardendale and remain on the main crushed-stone former railway. Do not substitute the white walking loop around the ballfields shown on the park map. Retrace at the two-mile limit or earlier before any public-road crossing, barrier, rough section or unclear continuation. Leave the natural downhill creek-access spur out of this ride. No ordinary road riding or street detour is part of the course.

Surface and effort: the developer describes this rail corridor as flat to mostly flat, with crushed gravel and shade; the regional record also identifies crushed stone. Those qualitative descriptions are useful, but date from different surveys and do not establish a maximum slope or guarantee firm gravel after rain. Expect a less smooth ride than asphalt, yield to walkers and turn early if the surface is loose or wet. This is for conventional bicycles; e-bike class rules are not established here.

Hours and cost: choose daylight and obey posted trail and parking terms. The reviewed sources do not specify an ordinary trail admission fee or exact trail hours. Pavilion rental charges, ballfield reservations and senior-center hours apply to those facilities, not automatically to a casual trail visit. Events can affect parking.

Access check: city park information, the linked 2026 access diagram, developer trail descriptions and a bounded closure search were reviewed October 19, 2026. No closure specific to this selected outing appeared in those sources. A 2026 report about prescribed fire on Five Mile Creek CU4 concerns a separate conservation property and is not treated as a closure of this rail trail. No on-site surface, bridge or storm inspection was performed.
