Sheffield, Illinois · Up to 2 miles return · Improved oil-and-chip / aggregate towpath; not uniform asphalt or grass horse bank
Start: Hennepin Canal — Visitor Center, Public Hennepin Canal Visitor Center lot, Sheffield, IL, reached from I80Exit45 and park signs. Fresh IDNR explicitly lists Visitor Center as mainline public parking and locates it beside towpath. Walk the lot connection to the improved mainline, excluding the separate 4.5 mile moderate hiking loop opposite the lot. Use designated ordinary visitor spaces, respect reserved spaces and walk through the lot to the signed main path. The address identifies a public facility, not a surveyed stall.
Ride: Follow the signed main path west on the signed improved mainline canal towpath. Turn after 1 outward mile or before the first public-road crossing, work barrier, uncertain continuation or uncomfortable transition, whichever comes first; retrace. Walk any initial lot or access-drive interface. Do not use a road or private-property detour.
Distance: Chosen 2-mile maximum return, not the full regional corridor or a surveyed parking-to-parking distance. Earlier interfaces shorten the outing; parking walking is extra.
Permission and effort: Source-backed ordinary bicycle use on the designated improved main path; walking-only spurs and adjacent private property are excluded. Owner describes the canal towpath as level and easy. Locks / aqueduct approaches can change grade and tread; turn before an uncomfortable transition. No numeric maximum slope supplied.
Planning: Choose daylight and posted parking terms. Visitor museum weekday 7:30 AM–3:30 PM is not a guarantee of all trail services. No current ordinary access tariff established; posted terms govern. Event, camping and rental charges are separate. Yield to horses at shared aqueducts and other users. Groups 25 or more need a park permit under retained brochure terms. Stay on improved bicycle bank; do not ride beyond barriers or assume grass horse bank is equivalent.
Access reviewed October 20, 2026 Central (October 21 UTC): Fresh operator confirms surfaced bicycle towpath and public visitor lot. Rock Falls 11th Street feeder bridge/adjacent path closure remains until construction complete despite contradictory local No Trail Closures wording; this westbound mainline return near Sheffield avoids that remote feeder reach. Lock 22 well and Lock 24 seasonal water are not reliable refill promises. Bring water; current signs / flood damage govern. This is a dated source review, not a field inspection or current-day all-clear. Postpone for snow, ice, high water, soft tread or barriers rather than improvising a bypass.
Bring water and choose suitable weather. Parking walking is extra. No surveyed parking-space pin or navigable GPX is supplied.
