St. Charles, Missouri · About 1.2 miles return · Packed fines · Ordinary pedal bicycle

This short outing heads north through Frontier Park on the Katy Trail, then returns near mile marker 39. It is a modest way to see the riverfront and historic depot without planning a long rail-trail trip. Expect other cyclists, people walking and park visitors, particularly during events.

The ride follows the main Katy path beside the park. The paved riverside park walk, museum grounds and streets in the historic district are different routes. The selected return also includes a vehicle-access crossing, so it should not be presented as completely free of traffic interfaces.

Find the southern public trailhead parking

Use the state trailhead parking near the riverward end of Boone's Lick Road, beside the Lewis & Clark Boathouse area and South Riverside Drive. Missouri State Parks identifies St. Charles trailhead parking here; its accessibility description places the path access at the western end of the level, paved lot.

Check the signs and choose a designated public trailhead space. Do not assume that a reserved museum, business or event space permits trail parking. Current parking charges and special restrictions have not been established. Walk your bicycle through the vehicle aisles to the main Katy path on the lot's west side, watching for moving and reversing cars.

A similarly named Google Maps pin appears farther north near the historic depot. That pin is not the southern parking location used for this guide. Use the named Boone's Lick approach and the manager's trailhead information when planning your arrival.

The lot-to-trail walk is extra and unmeasured. The owner notes a possible height difference of about an inch where asphalt meets the packed-fines trail. Inspect the transition before riding over it; no particular parking stall or protected walkway from every space is guaranteed here.

Ride north through Frontier Park

From the main Katy path beside the southern lot, head north toward Frontier Park. Walk across the Boone's Lick vehicle-access extension where it crosses the trail. Stop, look both ways and follow the current crossing signs. This guide does not establish that drivers will stop or that the crossing is staffed.

Once across, continue north on the main Katy line along the park's streetward edge. Stay off South Riverside Drive and keep to the main trail as paved park walks join it. You pass the Lewis & Clark statue area, the historic Katy Depot and other park facilities. People may cross the trail between parked cars, lawns, shelters and the riverfront. Slow down and give them room.

Continue to mile marker 39, north of the depot. Pull aside near the marker without blocking the trail, its junctions or another visitor's access. Turn earlier if the area is crowded or you cannot find comfortable turning space. The map places the marker, but the physical sign and turning clearance have not been inspected on site.

Return south along the same main path. Walk the Boone's Lick access crossing again, then walk through the parking area to your car. Do not substitute a ride on Riverside Drive or use a private parking area as a detour.

Distance and riding conditions

Allow about 1.2 miles for the main return, plus the parking walk. An internal check of the current state-mapped main line gives approximately 1.22 miles between a reference beside the southern lot and the mapped mile-39 area, out and back. This is a planning estimate, not a stall-to-stall measurement or navigation track.

The trailhead web page lists mile 39.5, while the state map stores approximately 39.6 for its regional trailhead point. Those references differ. The owner also explains that historic railroad mileposts do not always give exact trail distance, so this guide does not promise an exact distance from subtracting marker numbers.

The main Katy uses packed fines. Wet weather can leave soft spots, washouts or debris. The owner's accessibility description, last updated in November 2024, says slopes between trailheads are generally minimal unless noted. It identifies a 4.5% slope at mile 41.8, south of this selected outing; that is not a maximum-grade measurement for the short northbound course. No current surface inspection, maximum slope or accessibility certification is established here.

Katy Trail hours are sunrise to sunset. Frontier Park's broader dawn-to-midnight hours do not extend the state trail's riding hours. Stay right, alert people before passing and obey posted restrictions. This draft covers ordinary pedal bicycles. Event arrangements and temporary controls may affect the park even when the state trailhead record is listed Open.

Check status and services before visiting

On October 16, 2026, the state park-level map listed Katy as Partial Closure, while the St. Charles trailhead record stored Open. The four detailed trail-advisory records were reviewed; their described Katy work areas are elsewhere along the corridor. These records do not establish that the short Frontier Park course is clear today. Recheck the current maps, local signs, weather and event restrictions before riding.

The state's winter notice, active November 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027, lists St. Charles among trailheads whose restrooms remain open. The city also describes Frontier Park restrooms as open year round. Neither is a guarantee of a particular building's availability on arrival. Bring drinking water rather than relying on a listed business or fountain.

Frontier Park has flooded during past high-water events. The state's flood reference is a warning about potential impacts, not today's river level or a current closure decision. Do not enter flooded or posted-closed areas.
