Lafayette-Moraga — St. Mary's to Commons return — detailed guide
Source review: 2026-10-11. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.
An approximately 2.3-mile out-and-back on the paved Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail between the St. Mary's Road staging area and Moraga Commons. The district describes this rail trail as flat and wheelchair accessible. This is a shared suburban path, with local street and driveway junctions that require attention.
Start at the St. Mary's Road Trail Staging Area, beside St. Mary's Road near Rheem Boulevard in Moraga. Use the signed public regional-trail lot. This is a different start from the municipal park's interior lots and the town's recreation office. Parking capacity, fees and gate hours are not specified in the reviewed staging-area description; obey posted terms.
From the staging area, follow the paved regional trail west toward Moraga Commons, staying beside St. Mary's Road. Continue past the Bollinger Canyon Road and Stafford Drive junctions. Slow, stop where directed, and check for vehicles at crossings and driveway access. At Moraga Commons by Moraga Road, turn in a clear place on the trail before crossing Moraga Road, then retrace to your lot. Do not follow the Lamorinda Trail Loop, continue southwest toward Valle Vista, or enter EBMUD watershed trails as part of this outing.
The current manager describes this as section two: 1.16 miles between Rheem Boulevard at St. Mary's Road and Moraga Commons at Moraga Road. Returning gives 2.32 miles, displayed here as approximately 2.3. The older mileage sheet corroborates the section with 0.50 and 0.66-mile components. Your parking approach and the place you turn can change the distance slightly; no independent 2026 distance or maximum-grade survey has been made.
Ordinary bicycles are permitted on the designated trail. Current district policy allows Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes on designated paved regional trails, and prohibits Class 3 e-bikes and e-scooters. Keep to 15 mph maximum and slow to 5 mph when passing. Yield to pedestrians and equestrians, communicate before passing, and stop to ask equestrians how to pass safely. Helmets are required for riders under 18 and recommended for everyone. Stay on the designated regional trail.
The regional trail is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. unless otherwise posted or permitted; parking signs can impose separate hours. Moraga Commons municipal park opens one hour before sunrise and closes one hour after sunset. Choose daylight. No staging-specific fee is quoted in the reviewed sources; check the lot's signs. The EBMUD permit requirement concerns watershed trails beyond this outing, rather than this regional trail section.
The manager lists restrooms and drinking water at Moraga Commons. The town's restroom project page retains an old 2023 installation forecast, so it does not establish current working availability or a present park closure. Carry water and check facilities locally. No specific closure for this selected section appeared in the reviewed current alerts, but signs and barriers control access.
Sources checked October 11, 2026 UTC: manager trail and section mileage, regional trail map, paved-trail description, current bicycle policy, current alerts and Moraga Commons park information. Flatness is a manager description; no GPX, precise parking-stall pin or exhaustive crossing count is supplied.
Editorial entry complete with these qualifications. Fresh posted-access and condition checks and integration into the separate national website remain before launch.
