Start: North Western State Trail — Spring Lake Park, Public Spring Lake Park trailhead, 1590 Harbor–Petoskey Road (M-119), Petoskey, MI. Current council names Spring Lake Park public trailhead parking, on the trail side of M-119. Retained current township plan gives 1590 Harbor–Petoskey Road, superseding an older draft address. Walk the park approach, staying on this side of M-119; council headquarters across the highway is not this start. Use designated ordinary visitor spaces, respect reserved spaces and walk through the lot to the signed main path. The address identifies a public facility, not a surveyed stall.
Ride: Follow the signed main path north on the paved main toward Conway. Turn after 1 outward mile or before the first public-road crossing, work barrier, uncertain continuation or uncomfortable transition, whichever comes first; retrace. Walk any initial lot or access-drive interface. Do not use a road or private-property detour.
Distance: Chosen 2-mile maximum return, not the full regional corridor or a surveyed parking-to-parking distance. Earlier interfaces shorten the outing; parking walking is extra.
Permission and effort: Source-backed ordinary bicycle use on the designated improved main path; walking-only spurs and adjacent private property are excluded. Council teaching article dated May 29, 2020 calls Spring Lake–Oden paved and flat except a slight Hiawatha Road hill and several road crossings. This short return turns before the first road or uncomfortable rise. This is dated qualitative context, not a slope survey.
Planning: Township ordinance allows 6 a.m.–11 p.m. during open season, with seasonal closures and changed hours permitted. Choose daylight and obey current park signs; no winter-lot availability promised. No ordinary trail-use fee stated by council. Selected township lot charges are not independently established; obey posted terms. State Recreation Passport rules are not automatically assigned to a township lot. Ordinary pedal bicycles; stay on signed improved main. No overnight parking without permission. Council and DNR assisted-device rules differ by property; no blanket e-bike-class permission. Pets on six-foot leash.
Access reviewed October 20, 2026 Central (October 21 UTC): Fresh council labels trail Open and still identifies Spring Lake public arrival; retained 2026–2030 township plan forecasts park improvements, not an actual closure or completion. Do not infer a construction closure from a budget. Park can close seasonally even while the regional trail permits year-round use. Whole-corridor 30/32-mile descriptions remain inconsistent and are not this outing. This is a dated source review, not a field inspection or current-day all-clear. Postpone for snow, ice, high water, soft tread or barriers rather than improvising a bypass.
Bring water and choose suitable weather. Parking walking is extra. No surveyed parking-space pin or navigable GPX is supplied.
