Twin Lakes paved shoreline short return — detailed guide

Juneau, Alaska · Up to 1 mile out and back · Paved · Snow-free season

Try a slow, short ride beside Twin Lakes, with an easy option to turn back when the family park is busy. This guide is for an independent personal bicycle outing. Juneau's deputy parks director has expressly distinguished permitted personal riding from commercially guided bicycle tours, which are not permitted here.

Start: designated public parking at Twin Lakes Park beside Project Playground, 3401–3499 Glacier Highway, Juneau. Use the park lot identified by the city, not private lodging parking or a road shoulder. Walk your bicycle through the lot and busy playground entrance to the main paved shoreline path.

Ride: follow the paved path north along the lakeshore, away from the playground. Turn after half a mile outward, or sooner at the path end, a street connection, barrier or unsuitable section, and return the same way. The one-mile maximum is a designed distance cap; no official half-mile marker is assumed. Parking walking is extra. This is not a circuit of both lakes or a route to the Pioneer Home, hatchery or wetlands.

Keep to the shore-level pavement. Leave hillside spurs, the playground, fishing dock and its ramps out of the riding course. Walk a narrow or crowded approach. Do not cross or ride Glacier Highway or Egan Drive to complete the distance.

Surface and effort: the city confirms a paved shoreline path and paved parking. A nearby local lodging operator describes the lakeside route as mostly flat; that is a qualitative local description, not an official slope measurement or accessibility certification. Small rises and approaches still matter. Shorten the ride or walk if a slope or surface is uncomfortable; skip ice, flooding and slippery pavement.

Hours and cost: the park lists 7 a.m.–midnight; choose daylight within current posted terms. Audubon's park profile lists no fee, while the city lists paid shelter reservations separately. No shelter rental is needed for this personal ride. Follow parking signs. The city's water fountain and restrooms are seasonal, April–September; bring water and do not expect them open in October. E-bike classes are unconfirmed.

Sharing and access: yield to walkers, children and birdwatchers, and stop clear of the path to turn. Sources reviewed October 20, 2026. July 15, 2026 cleaning concerned the playground; its expected reopening time is not a current inspection of the shoreline. No ongoing selected-path closure was identified in the bounded review. Follow any new closure signs and avoid a busy event.
