Van Fleet — Mabel to the mile-25 picnic stop and back — detailed guide
Source review: 2026-10-11. A dated source review does not guarantee current-day conditions.
Ride about eight miles out and back on the northern portion of the General James A. Van Fleet State Trail. Start at Mabel Trailhead, 7981 County Road 772, Webster, Florida, using the signed public parking south of State Road 50. The park identifies parking, a picnic pavilion, grill and restrooms here. Follow the designated paved trail south; this outing does not require crossing SR50.
Continue to the covered picnic table near mile marker 25 North. That named rest stop is listed by the park. Pause clear of the riding surface, then retrace the same paved route to Mabel. Stay on the rail-trail rather than the adjacent equestrian shoulders or dirt roads into Richloam. Bay Lake and the southern Polk City–TECO connection are longer outings beyond this guide.
The distance is an estimate. The northern end is at the end of the park's 29.2-mile corridor; subtracting mile 25 gives roughly 4.2 miles each way, or 8.4 for the return. Because the picnic stop is near that marker and parking approaches vary, the display rounds conservatively to about eight miles, rather than promising an exact stall-to-stall distance. Turn back sooner if that better suits your group.
The park expressly welcomes bicycles and describes little incline. Its current pages describe an eight-foot paved path; an older management plan gives a different width. This is a qualitative description of a comfortable rail grade, not a survey of every slope or pavement defect. The manager warns of uneven surfaces on the southern trail. Choosing the northern section keeps that longer southern extent outside this outing, but does not guarantee flawless pavement here.
Use the trail between 8 a.m. and sunset; the park lists no fee. Yield to other users, announce passing and keep pets on a handheld leash no longer than six feet. The manager permits electric bicycles on designated bicycle trails; follow current signs. Watch parking approaches, agricultural access and any road interfaces. The park's three-crossroads statement concerns the entire corridor, not a surveyed crossing count for this short ride.
Bring drinking water, snacks, sun protection and insect repellent. The manager lists a potable source at Mabel, but do not depend on it being available when you arrive. This rural setting has limited services. Check the park page and posted barriers before setting out. The sources reviewed October 11, 2026 do not establish an on-site all-clear; a historical 2017 storm warning is also not a newly dated closure.
Sources: parking, picnic stop and amenities, cycling and grade, manager's pavement message, corridor history and historical north map, page 47 of the 2012 plan. The written outing is complete with these qualifications; fresh access checks and integration into the separate USA website remain.
